TRAILER HITCH FAQ

What is Tongue Weight?

Tongue Weight, also notated as “TW” is defined as the downward force that the tongue of a trailer applies to the hitch of the tow vehicle. In other words, the force the trailer tongue exerts on the hitch ball. Incorrect tongue weight can turn a good towing experience into a dangerous one. A too-heavy tongue weight may negatively impact vehicle handling, especially when rounding curves and taking corners. This is due to the fact that the front of the tow vehicle is being lifted up, reducing the weight on the front tires and thus their grip and steering effectiveness. Consult with an Auto Trim Restyling of St Louis Professional to determine your towing and tow hitch installation needs.

4 pin vs 7 pin Wiring, What’s the difference?

Trailer Wiring isn’t as complicated as it may seem. 4 pin wiring refers to the standard wiring that you would add for normal light duty towing. The 4 pins refer to the 4 outputs on the wiring harness, which consist of Ground wire, Running Lights, and Left + Right turn signals. A 7 pin trailer wiring harness adds outputs for Trailer Brake, Reverse lights, and an optional 12Volt connection as well as the other 4 outputs from standard trailer wiring. Because of these additional outputs, 7 pin trailer wiring installation is mostly used for heavy-duty towing, and only benefits those who are adding a brake controller to control trailer brakes.

Trailer Hitch Installation Near Me: Where should you have a hitch installed?

The decision of where to have trailering accessories installed isn’t a decision to be taken lightly. Incorrectly determining tow needs based on GVRW, GAWR, Payload Capacity and other factors could be the difference between a happy vacation or a jack-knifed tow rig. Find a local trailer-towing expert to consult with to determine what you really need to have safe and happy travels.
