Tongue Weight, also notated as “TW” is defined as the downward force that the tongue of a trailer applies to the hitch of the tow vehicle. Trailer Wiring isn’t as complicated as it may seem. 4 pin wiring refers to the standard wiring that you would add for normal light duty towing. The 4 pins refer to the 4 outputs on the wiring harness, which consist of Ground wire, Running Lights, and Left + Right turn signals. A 7 pin trailer wiring harness adds outputs for Trailer Brake, Reverse lights, and an optional 12Volt connection as well as the other 4 outputs from standard trailer wiring. Because of these additional outputs, 7 pin trailer wiring installation is mostly used for heavy-duty towing, and only benefits those who are adding a brake controller to control trailer brakes.
